90 percent rapes in India go unreported. Of the reported, only 30 percent go to trial, of them only 1/3rd go to jail. According to statistics, 34,651 cases of rape were reported in india last year, but this is just the tip of the iceberg since 90 percent cases went unreported. Our society is in a state of disarray when it comes to legal disputes and dispensing of justice. There are millions of cases pending in our courts which continue to struggle due to lack of manpower, infrastructure and reform in our legal and judicial framework. This becomes even more imperative when it comes to atrocities like rape where the victim has had to endure physical and mental agony all through the duration of the trial, which sometimes takes years.
Addressing the media, Mr. Vijay Tata, Founder of New India Charitable Trust said, ”Speedy trial is the essence of criminal justice. it is an integral part of the fundamental right to life and liberty. Justice delayed is justice denied. The victims go through a harrowing experience while seeking justice. We often hear about such justice being delivered when it becomes redundant to the grieving. This systemic lethargy must end for people’s faith in the law of the land to prevail. A time has come where we need to come together to raise a concern about this serious lacuna in our society. ”
